Gippsland

The Gippsland wine region is located in southeastern Victoria, Australia, approximately 150 km east of Melbourne. The region spans a vast area from the eastern outskirts of Melbourne to the New South Wales border, and includes several sub-regions such as South Gippsland, East Gippsland, and West Gippsland.

The climate in Gippsland is generally cool and maritime, with the proximity to the coast providing cool sea breezes and moderate rainfall throughout the year. The region's varied topography and soil types result in a range of microclimates, allowing for the production of a diverse range of wines.

Viticulture in Gippsland dates back to the 1800s, but it wasn't until the 1970s that the region began to gain attention for its wine production. The first commercial winery in Gippsland, Narkoojee, was established in 1980 by Harry Friend, who planted the first vines in 1979.
