Clyde Park Wines
Clyde Park Vineyard was established in 1979 by the legendary Gary Farr, who first planted a modest acreage of north-facing Pinot Noir at a time when the Geelong wine region was just beginning to make its mark. Over the years, the property has passed through several hands and is now lovingly managed by owners Terry and Sue, who have dedicated the past 20 years to preserving its unique character and potential.
Nestled in the Bannock Burn subregion—approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Geelong—Clyde Park sits at the heart of the Moorabool Valley. This distinctive locale, famed for its historic vineyards including those of by Farr, Bannock Burn Vineyards, and Lethbridge Wines, is cradled by the Moorabool River. The river not only provided a natural guide for early gold-seekers en route to Ballarat but also continues to impart essential warmth and wind protection to the vineyard today.
The region itself boasts a dramatic natural backdrop: a dormant volcano has gifted the soils with rich deposits of dark basalt and limestone. These soils, combined with the valley’s position in a rain shadow, create a challenging yet ideal environment for vine growth. While the arid conditions make conventional farming difficult, they ensure that the vines produce naturally low yields—a practice that concentrates flavors and complexity in the fruit.
At Clyde Park, the commitment to low-yield viticulture means that, as the vines mature past the 30-year mark, they reveal an ever more profound expression of their terroir. Their Single Vineyard F Block (39 years old) Pinot Noir , along with the 30-year-old B2 and D Blocks Pinot Noir, exemplify how the interplay of ancient soils, climatic extremes, and careful vine management culminates in exceptional, nuanced Pinot Noir that truly reflects the essence of Geelong.
