The Moss Wood Autrement Pinot Noir 2024 is a fresh interpretation of one of Margaret River’s most historic vineyards, first planted in 1969. The name “Autrement”—French for “in another way”—reflects a renewed approach to Moss Wood’s Pinot Noir program, focusing on Karridale’s cooler maritime subregion and the nuanced expression of three distinct clones: D4V2, 2325, and D2V6. Together, these selections lend complexity, perfume, and texture to this fine-boned yet generous wine.
Hand-picked and meticulously sorted, fruit was vinified using a combination of 30% whole-bunch fermentation (to build savoury complexity) and 70% destemmed berries (to preserve purity and brightness). The must was cold-soaked at 8°C for 48 hours, then allowed to warm naturally for wild yeast fermentation, before inoculation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae to ensure a steady finish to dryness. Gentle hand plunging three times daily and a 16-day skin contact yielded delicate extraction, while both primary and malolactic fermentations were completed in tank to maintain clarity of fruit and fine balance.
Tasting Note
Brilliant crimson red, clear and luminous. The bouquet bursts with red fruits—strawberry, raspberry, and cherry—woven with rose petal, potpourri, and subtle spice. Beneath the fruit lie undertones of cedar, mushroom, and forest floor, accented by hints of clove and charred oak. The palate is supple and velvety, showcasing generous red fruit density, savoury notes of dried herbs and earth, and a long, elegant finish carried by fine tannins and bright acidity.
