Mornington, VIC, Australia
The 2023 Tuerong Pinot Noir is the most powerful and muscular of Montalto’s single vineyard releases, offering brooding depth and energy from one of the lowest-lying, warmest sites in the Montalto portfolio. A striking vintage shaped by meticulous vineyard work and winemaking detail, it captures the essence of Tuerong’s rich soils and early-ripening character.
Hand-picked and hand-sorted fruit underwent a combination of classic and carbonic fermentation: 42% of the wine was whole-bunch fermented using carbonic maceration for two weeks before being destemmed to finish fermentation on skins. The remainder was cold-soaked for 3–7 days before wild fermentation. The wine was pressed to French oak barriques (32% new) for malolactic fermentation and aged for 11 months before bottling.
Aromas of dark cherry, bramble, cola, charcuterie and parsnip mingle with cinnamon, sarsaparilla and earth. The palate is rich, textural and structured, showing mulberry, blackberry, Campari, spice and firm, chalky tannins. It’s long, savoury and layered—complex now, with even more to unfold over time.

“Red cherry, raspberry, blood orange, cocoa, licorice and coffee ground complexity. This was my favourite of the 2023 Montalto releases.”
FinePinot Note
A bold, structured Pinot Noir from Mornington’s Tuerong subregion—spiced, savoury and endlessly drinkable. If Merricks is savoury and North One is delicate, Tuerong is strength and spice. Ideal with pork belly, miso eggplant, or truffle-glazed chicken thighs.

Best Regional Pinot Noir95/ 100 - Steve Leszczynski, Qwine.
"This Tuerong is probably the most generous of the Montalto Single Vineyard Pinots. The Merricks is all things savoury, North One is pretty and this is muscular and measured not to mention that there are some Central Otago vibes going on here... It's long, persistent and moreish. I could get awfully comfortable here. Excellent stuff.”93 points - Halliday Wine Companion
"Since 42% of the wine undergoes carbonic maceration for 2 weeks before it’s destemmed, it makes an impact on the aroma/flavour profile – and a very good one. Heady with joss sticks, florals and lots of autumn leaves and damp earth, meaty reduction yet plenty of dark and sour cherries in the mix. Mid-weighted with sinewy if firm tannins; this feels energised, tangy and tart with perky acidity in charge. Delicious now yet in a transitional phase, so this will garner more complexity in time."
