Coal River Valley, TAS, Australia
Crafted by the team at Frogmore Creek, 42 Degrees South Pinot Noir 2024 reflects the cool-climate purity and gentle precision of Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Named after the island's central latitude, this wine embodies the estate’s minimalist philosophy: let the fruit do the work.
The 2024 growing season began with early warmth followed by a cool, windy flowering, resulting in naturally reduced yields and intensely flavoured fruit. Grapes were sourced exclusively from Frogmore Creek’s vineyards in Cambridge and Campania, managed sustainably by fifth-generation local grower Danny Belbin. A mix of wild and inoculated fermentation followed a gentle 48-hour cold soak, with pumpovers once daily before pressing. Aged in stainless steel to preserve freshness, the wine was filtered and blended in July for staggered bottling.
In the glass, it offers fresh cherry and strawberry aromas, with lifted florals and subtle spice. The palate is lively and juicy, with red berries, soft tannins, and a zesty acid line that finishes with vibrancy and finesse. A true example of approachable, cool-climate Pinot Noir made with elegance and restraint.

Tasmania is Australia’s southernmost wine region. Its commercial vineyards date back to 1823, when Bartholomew Broughton planted the first vines. Incidentally, the very first vines in Victoria and South Australia also originated from Tasmania. The Tasmanian wine industry then lay dormant for nearly 100 years due to the gold rush, with commercial winemaking only resuming in the 1950s. After 70 years of development, Tasmania has become synonymous with premium wines, especially Pinot Noir. The island is divided into several sub‑regions—Tamar Valley, Pipers River, Derwent Valley, Coal River Valley, Huon Valley, and the East Coast. Among these, Coal River Valley is the most sought‑after: the winner of the 2024 Australian Pinot Noir Challenge hails from there, as does the highly coveted Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir. For a Pinot Noir enthusiast, Tasmania Pinot Noir is a not to be overlooked.
