Marlborough Pinot Noir

Marlborough is located on the northeastern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. It is situated at the top of the South Island and is approximately 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) away from Blenheim, the closest main city.

Marlborough has a maritime climate, with warm summers and cool winters. The region is sheltered by mountains, which create a rain shadow effect and result in a dry and sunny climate. The combination of long sunshine hours, cool nights, and well-drained soils contributes to the vibrant flavors and aromas in the wines produced here.

Commercial viticulture in Marlborough began in the 1970s when vineyards were first planted in the region. At the time, it was largely seen as a region suitable for sheep farming. However, the discovery of the region's potential for producing exceptional Sauvignon Blanc wines in the 1980s changed the course of Marlborough's viticulture history. Today, Marlborough is renowned globally for its Sauvignon Blanc.

The first commercial winery in Marlborough was Montana Wines (now known as Brancott Estate). In 1973, Montana Wines planted the first Sauvignon Blanc vines in the region and produced the first commercial vintage in 1979.
