Grant Taylor's Valli Gibbston Vineyard sits high in the cool Gibbston sub-region of Central Otago (320–475m), on alluvial loess over river gravels, with vines planted from 1995. The 2023 shows a bright garnet hue and savoury, spiced aromatics of wild thyme, rosemary, fennel and mushroom, complemented by dark cherry, ripe strawberry and dried rose petals.
Harvested across April 2023, the wine saw 25% whole-bunch fermentation with an average 27 days on skins, then 11 months in French oak (27% new; Ana Selection and François Frères) with no fining. The elegantly structured palate is layered and compact with a purposeful flow — fine tannins and exquisite perfume the hallmarks of Gibbston Pinot. Delicious now, it will reward 20-odd years.
