Picnic is Two Paddocks' perennial everyday favourite — the second label of actor-proprietor Sam Neill's certified-organic Central Otago estate, its label carrying a portrait of Sam's grandfather, S.E.D. Neill, a wine merchant of an earlier generation. Drawn from the estate's own organic vineyards across the Alexandra, Gibbston and Bannockburn sub-regions, it opens with bright red currant, wild herb and purple-flower aromatics, layered with black and red cherry and a thread of fine spice.
Winemaker Dean Shaw built the 2024 in a deliberately approachable style: hand-harvested fruit, 89% de-stemmed, a nine-day cold soak and a wild-yeast ferment, then nine months in older French barriques (just 1% new oak). The palate is rich and warmly textured yet elegant, its soft tannins carrying to a long, persistent finish — generous, and the kind of wine that keeps you reaching for the next glass.

For us this is the ideal gateway to Central Otago Pinot — organically farmed, unpretentious and immediately delicious, with just enough structure to take to the table. The everyday bottle we're always happy to open.
Perfect Pairing: Roast duck, mushroom risotto, glazed pork belly, or a simple board of charcuterie.
