Faiveley acquired Le Clos du Roy in 1971, a Premier Cru long considered among the finest climats of Mercurey. The site faces south-south-west on a cool, compact clay-limestone over white marl — soils that warm quickly and lend the wine the fine tannins more often associated with the great villages of the Côte de Nuits. The 2023 vintage shows the cooler, fresher profile of the year: bright red-fruit lift, finely drawn tannins and the savoury Côte Chalonnaise character at its most classical.
Le Clos du Roy covers 2 ha 54 a of south-south-west-facing slope, planted with vines established in 1971 and 1982. Soils are cool, compact clay-limestone over white marl — compositions that warm quickly and contribute the fine, structured tannins that elevate this Premier Cru above its village peers.
Subtle aromas of small black and red fruits mingle elegantly with woody and smoky notes. These fruity flavours emerge greedily in the mouth. The wine coats the palate with velvety tannins, offering a smooth, warm and harmonious experience.

Burgundy is the spiritual home of Pinot Noir, where the variety has been cultivated for over a millennium. Centred on the Côte d'Or — the narrow east-facing escarpment running from Dijon south to Maranges — viticulture is divided into the Côte de Nuits (sources of the most structured, age-worthy reds such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges) and the Côte de Beaune (home to Pommard, Volnay, Chassagne-Montrachet and Beaune). Soil composition shifts metre by metre — limestone, marl and clay — creating the famous mosaic of climats that define each appellation. Burgundian Pinot Noir remains the worldwide reference for the variety: perfumed, savoury, structured and capable of decades of evolution. Leading houses span the entire spectrum, from Grand Cru domaines such as Faiveley, Bonneau du Martray, Dugat-Py and Henri & Philippe Jouan, to outstanding village wines from Maison Louis Jadot, Bouchard Père & Fils, Armand Heitz, and producers across Mercurey, Santenay and the Hautes-Côtes offering exceptional value.
